Train children in the right way,
and when old, they will not stray. Proverbs 22:6
Dear Friends,
It has been an exciting summer here at FLC. Since the beginning of July, Green Pastures Christian Fellowship (GPCF) has been holding their Mandarin language worship in the gym while we worship in English in the Sanctuary. Since most of their children and youth speak English, they have been joining us in worship (which has made for a wonderful “crowd” of children for my Children’s Message!).
In talking with Pastor Bob, he has told me that many of the families are rather new to the Christian faith. Because they are new, they are glad that their children have the opportunity to learn the Bible stories while they—the parents--are also learning. The ability of the children and youth to be able to participate in our worship is one of the main reasons why GPCF was excited to be able to worship at FLC. The parents of GPCF recognize that they are not ready to teach their children the Bible stories.
The presence of GPCF has brought into stark relief one of the more important things that we do as a faith community: Passing on the Faith to our Children. I must confess that one of the most persistent conversations that I have heard since I have been here is, We can’t find anyone to teach the children! There have been a handful of adults who taken this on (but some of them are getting weary). What we need are some more members to step forward so we can provide a strong faith foundation for our children.
Even if you don’t consider yourself a “teacher,” I invite you to consider doing your part in the faith formation of our children. For me, the criteria for helping out with our children’s ministry (which we are calling FLiCker!) is:

· To care about our children,
· To offer some of your time,
· To share about your faith,
· To enjoy being with them,
· To be willing.
More and more, we are trying to make the learning experiential: making, doing, being, playing, acting, singing, etc. It just takes a willingness to offer some of your abilities and gifts.
The primary thing is… to love the children. These children are marvelous gifts of God. It is life-giving to be part of their faith growth.
We are in the process of trying to find a Children’s Ministry Coordinator who can give 5-7 hours a week (paid) to plan the curriculum and make sure things are ready to go. If you know of someone, contact myself or Kerri Ledene Campbell… but you’ll notice that this person is only the “coordinator.” We need you to do your part so that we can take care of our children (which includes the children of GPCF) and work toward the kingdom of God being manifested in the future.
Peace,
Pastor Phil
